Renata D. Turner Appointed Presiding Judge

Fulton County Juvenile Court is proud to announce that Renata D. Turner has been appointed to serve as a presiding judge. Selected by a panel of Superior Court jurists, Presiding Judge Turner will join Chief Presiding Judge Bradley J. Boyd, Presiding Judge Juliette W. Scales and three associate judges to hear cases involving allegations of dependency, delinquency, children in need of services, parental rights and juvenile traffic violations.

Prior to this latest appointment, Presiding Judge Turner served as an associate judge since being named to the Juvenile Court bench in the spring of 2015. Since that time she has made innumerable contributions to the wellbeing of children and spearheaded the Fulton School-Justice Pathways Partnership. This innovative grant-funded initiative seeks to end the school to prison pipeline and has thus far reduced school-based court referrals by approximately 50 percent compared to pre-initiative numbers. Presiding Judge Turner has also been instrumental in working with both teenagers and parents, and organizes and hosts annual anti-gang summits in the Fulton community.

Presiding Judge Turner brings a wealth of experience to her new role. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a degree in psychology, Presiding Judge Turner was a caseworker for the Fulton County Department of Family and Children Services for five years before matriculating for the Southern California School of Law where she earned her J.D. and became a member of the California Bar in 1989.

After becoming a member of the Georgia Bar in 1990, Presiding Judge Turner began her legal career as a law clerk for Superior Court Judge Frank M. Hull before working for the City of Atlanta as an assistant city attorney. She later worked for the Social Security Administration as assistant general counsel, joined the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyer’s Foundation as Director of its Domestic Violence Project, and began teaching Domestic Violence Law at Georgia State’s University of College and Law in 2005 before joining academia full-time in 2007 as a director at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School.

Prior to joining Fulton County Juvenile Court as an associate judge, Presiding Judge Turner served as a part-time magistrate with Fulton County State Court. Raised in Atlanta, Judge Turner is a graduate of Therrell High School and a longtime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Hillside International Truth Center.
